Heartworm–shot or topical?

Poor Kingsley had every test imaginable trying to find what caused his heart rate to drop from 127 to 76.  We thought we were going to lose him until the specialist dxed the Vagus nerve problem. Rabbit & potato are the components of his Hydrolyzed Diet. (means the protein is able to be broken down so small it won’t excite his immune system) The Vet said we could try other things after he’s been on the diet a year–that will be this Oct. A handler we know accidentially gave him a very small piece of beef.  Thought it was so small –no problem. But we ended up in the ER all night. He had horrible stomach cramps was stiff with pain. But they couldn’t give him oral meds. I don’t want to put him thru that again. So we aren’t going to try something new & run the risk of him suffering . His heart rate is stable at 97 & he back competing again. And yes, heartworm is a serious problem out here. A Vet I train with had her Border Collie come down with heartworm even tho she gave the oral meds faithfully.   Ann–Elf & Kingsley New Mexico, USA

Sprained knee

My Puppy keeps spraining his right front knee. He is running and will go down on it. So, he has been limping. We have kept him pinned up in a very small area to heal and it starts getting better but then he reinjures. Does anyone have any recommendations besides rest and ice? He’s 7 mos. and is an Australian Shepherd so, as you can imagine, it is very hard to keep him still. Thank you for your help. Robin

Premium Edge Dog Food

All: I am hoping the members here might help with a question on dog food. A friend of mine feeds Premium Edge, Skin & Coat to her Lab. He’s done fine on it for years, but recently started vomiting for no reason. Vet couldn’t find anything as well. Her feed supplier told her that Premium Edge had a batch of food that had higher than normal protein. She called Premium Edge who told her they didn’t have any such thing happen. Any advice on how to check this further? Chris G.

Arthritis meds

Has anyone tried Cetyl M on their dog and what are your opinions of it? My 10 yr old goldie has been suffering from arthritis in his front feet (very swollen, very sore) for over a year now and I have tried just about everything on the market. The last 3 mths I’ve been giving him “Lube All” (ingredients sodium hyaluronate, MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate) but have not noticed any improvement. Within the last 2 weeks I’ve added vit c to the “Lube All” and I think I see a slight improvement, so wondering if the “Lube All” is missing an important ingredient. I do have the Christie Keith articles which I will re-read. I have arthritis myself and “lube all” blend does work for me hence my disappointment in not helping my boy, but I also take extra Vit C plus magnesium, and of course dogs and humans are not necessary the same. My other question, is it true that once the arthritis calcifies (or whatever it is it does) that the pain will go? Thanks for all and any suggestions. SueC, NZ

ProHeart 6

For your information/cross posting.

ProHeart 6 was pulled from the market at one time -but I believe it has returned to the market. I would never, ever, give any of my dogs ProHeart6 -

Please do your research.

My Papillon has a Vagus nerve irritation problem in the gastrointestinal tract. He can eat rabbit, sweet potato & white potato only. He can take nothing else by mouth. My Vet told me there is a topical & a shot for heartworm. We compete in obedience & agility, indoors & outdoors, so he needs protection. Does anyone use a topical or shot? What brand do you use? Have you noticed any side effects? I’m leaning toward the once yearly shot for convenience. I also have a 9 yo Cavalier. I’m thinking of also giving it to her as she is still competing also but is now considered a “senior” dog. PSSST…don’t tell her!! Ann–Elf & Kingsley New Mexico, USA

Heartworm treatment with Melarsomine

Hi, Michele,

Have you watched the videos at “oldcountryvet”? He explains in detail how easiest to treat heartworm, the conventional way but using Heartguard, not arenic.

Also, there are several well known herbal remedies, which I have not used yet so can’t give you details. However, check out the homeophatic group. Or do a google search. You have time to check it out. I personally wouldn’t be so keen on using an arsenic treatment.

Some folks have had good luck with Heartwormfree.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Lymphoma

Hi Amy

I know of someone whose dog lived 4 years after being diagnosed with lymphoma but that dog WAS treated with chemo. Also when the dog did die it was not from the lymphoma. It died of kidney failure but the dog was 14 years old when it died.

I think with chemo the average life span after lymphoma diagnosis is about 1 year. Also 1 year may not sound like a long time but to a dog whose average life span is 15 years that would be like a person being told they would have another 6 years if they receive treatment.

General note Please check further before you use peroxide. It can be much more than just irritatng.

Broken nail

My Sheltie tore one of his nails right before his grooming appointment. The groomer trimmed and cleaned it. It wasn’t bleeding at all.

Two weeks on, it started bleeding again. Today, he’s licking it a bit. Is it time for a vet appointment, or is there something I can do for it at home? I don’t have any experience with nail issues. Thanks.

Chemicals and dog paws…

I work at a kennel that uses a lot of chemicals to clean their kennels and the floor in the kennel and I never use chemicals around my dogs. I use organic plant based soaps and detergents.. free of dye, fragrance, toxins ect. I also never use chemicals on the floor or on my dishes or anything. Anyway, I know dogs absorb a lot through the pads on their paws and I’m concerned because my dogs come with me to work every day and spend time in the kennel. I keep them outside in the grass play yards as much as possible, but they do have to come inside.

so.. my question is.. is there any way to protect my guys’ feet? I was considering like a paw wax but I didn’t really want to use something sticky. And I realize they are breathing in these chemicals as well, but I’m just working on one thing at a time right now. :)

Thanks!

Split Lip

I concur with the Hydrogen peroxide/clean care info, it hasn’t been recommended for any sort of continuous cleaning for quite some time now in First Aid. Okay to use it once if you are having trouble getting a would cleaned out but not as a frequent cleaner. Paulette

Just got an update from the kennel. They think she may have a “paper cut” from a paper bowl in which they gave her a snack. It makes sense in a way, as it is a really straight slit!. They suggested just keeping it clean with peroxide, as I do not want to go to the Vet. I haven’t done this, as I’m not sure if I should use human grade or just regular?

Lymphoma

I posted a few months back that my lab was diagnosed with indulgent lymphoma evident by a biopsy of her nodes in her neck. I met someone this weekend who never diagnosed her lab but said her lab has swollen neck nodes at age 5 and lived to 13. Has anyone had a dog that had swollen lymph nodes in their neck and live a long time. I was convinced with this form of lymphoma that she would not be with me for a long time and now I’m thinking more positively. Also, anyone her about the link to thyroid issue and swollen nodes being linked together.

Thank you, Amy Hume

My dogs ear

This is a classic sign of a hematoma( a collection of blood caused by a break in a blood vessel) and not to be treated lightly. This needs to be treated by a vet or complications may arise. DO NOT TRY TO LANCE IT YOURSELF.

Heartworm treatment with Melarsomine

Hi,

Does anyone have knowledge of heartworm treatment? Our dog is early Stage 1 and 2 years old, shows no signs of disease. The vet wants to give Melarsomine, administered via deep intramuscular injection over a period of time.

Anyone have knowledge or been through this?

Thanks, Michele

[DogHealth] – treating tumors

Joy, our dog has a tumor as well - it’s on more than one organ – primarily the liver and pancreas – we have discovered a list called DogLiverDisease and were following advice on that – which does say low carb, low protein….we are also using tumeric, Azdoly, Hepato liquid supplement – feeding her pediasure too since she is not eating enough to keep nutrients in her body – she’s a border collie/heeler mix and now only weights about 30 pounds, down from 50.

What are you going for your dog exactly?

I would not do that again.
